Ambrosia Software, Inc. is running a Apeiron high score contest! When you get a high score in Apeiron, you’ll be given a 10 letter high score code that’ll allow you to enter your score in the contest!
The contest is underway and will end June 1st, 1995, so get your score codes in quick! See below for more contest information. Now onto a breakdown of this month’s top scorers in the Apeiron High Score Contest:

There is still plenty of time to enter the contest, so crack your knuckles and get those codes in! You can mail, fax, or e-mail them to us; see below for our address, fax, and e-mail information. You must be using Apeiron 1.0.0 or later to get the high score code, and should send in just the code (not your score), and your name/address that you used when you registered for Apeiron.
The top 50 scores will receive a cool Apeiron/Ambrosia T-shirt; cash prizes go out to the top 3 scores as follows: 1st place: $300. 2nd place: $100. 3rd place: $50. Send in as many score codes as you like; we’ll use only the best score you submit. You must be a registered user to enter the contest, so please include your name/address along with your score code so we can check our database to make sure you are registered.
Loony Caliburns, Batman!
Well, the high score contests for StarPlay’s pinball games, Crystal Caliburn and Loony Labyrinth, continue. The highest Mac score for CC in January, 1995, belongs to Mark Sargent, of Langley, WA, with 859,530,170. The highest score for the 1995 contest (which began in November...) is also held by Mark.
On the LL side, things are a bit more complicated. You see, people are scoring up to the limit. Currently, for the 1995 contest, five people have gone as high as you can go: 21,474,836,470 points. So StarPlay has released Loony Labyrinth 1.02 (an updater is available on this CD-ROM), where extra balls are much harder to get. In their press release they state, “We doubt anyone will reach this score with the new 1.02 version.” Sounds like a challenge. StarPlay will continue to accept scores from both versions for a little while, but they will eventually require that scores come from version 1.02 of the game.
Remember, the top ten scores each month get free t-shirts, and the top scorer for the year, well, who knows, but it’s gotta be good! Plus, there’s a new category for junior players, 12 years old and under. The top three junior scorers each month get the free t-shirts. So send in your scores, kids, and win free stuff!
More for Your Game: Scenarios, Cheaters and Add-Ons
We’ve collected all the new cheaters and scenarios we could find, and anything else we thought might help Mac gamers get as much enjoyment out of their games as possible. Cheaters can diminish your game experience if you’re not careful, but we trust you to know when to say when. Scenarios are usually made by our readers or others out there with the itch to create. We won’t take responsibility for their quality, but you’re sure to find some gems in what we bring you. The following is what we’ve found this month to give you more for your game.
• Marathon fans, it ain’t over yet. This month brings us updated versions of the Marathon Kit, the Marathon Guide 2.0, and Marathon Secrets 1.5. Plus, we have the Marathon Physics Model Editor 1.1, which allows you to change the physics of the game. In layman’s terms, you can change the guns, the gravity, the power, etc. The manual itself is a pleasure, and it’ll get you itching to try it out. Well, we’ve got Marathon Physics Models for you and your trigger finger, in the Scenarios folder. But that’s not all. This month also brings you the Shapes Installer, which lets you install new textures for the walls of the Marathon station. And finally, there’s NetEdit 1.0, which allows you to control the number and recurrence of aliens in network games.
• For people who can’t get enough of TacOps, we’ve found TacOps Web, a FAQ in the form of a Worldwide Web (WWW) document. You’ll need a Web browser (like MacWeb) to read it, but it’s got a ton of information in it.
• Fantasoft has done it again. This time they’ve released Assault on Giant Mountain (version 1.1 is out now) as their second add-on scenario to the Realmz game engine. The area to explore is huge, and the bug count seems to be relatively low. You’ll need a registered version of Realmz to play this scenario, or the earlier Prelude to Pestilence (now at version 1.2). See the Update Files below for information on the latest release of Realmz.
• Among the miscellaneous scenarios we have for you this month are the usual collection of Wolf3D encounters, and Gopher Golf greens for your enjoyment. New to the group are various iterations of the Marathon Physics Models, destined to make your Marathon games much more... interesting.
The Update Files
Updates are new versions of programs that provide bug fixes or game enhancements to older versions. Sometimes an updater will fix a critical bug, sometimes it fixes something that has no bearing on your computer. You can come right here to find out what’s new and what it does. Then you can find the updaters you need on the IMG CD.
• Marathon 1.1 is now available. They’ve fixed a number of bugs, including some networking and some single-player bugs. Among other things, they say, “The ‘A’ key will always work now. We swear.” Also included are a few enhancements, including the ability to play in millions of colors, if you have the hardware and the 15MB of RAM they suggest.
• Warlords II has been updated to version 1.0.4 for the PPC. It offers better speed while drawing the hidden map, and it lets you limit the number of squares an army can move per second. No more teleporting armies! This update is not for users of the 68k version.
• PowerPOKER is now at version 1.2.1. This is a considerable upgrade from version 1.0, with over fifteen bug fixes and four new poker games. Very worth your while.
• Loony Labyrinth is now at version 1.02. This is a significant update, in that it changes the rules slightly. It is now more difficult to receive extra balls, making long game play harder for the experts. All Loony Labyrinth contest scores must, from now on, be produced with this version of the game.
• PlayMaker Football patches have been released for version 2.1.1, improving it to version 2.1.2.3, and the manual to version 2.1.2. Also included is a playbook updater that will make your playbooks from versions 1.0 and 2.0 compatible with the current game. These will only work with PlayMaker Football 2.1.1, not with the Demo version.
• Realmz has been updated, again. (I know, I know). You thought they were done, but the bugs keep cropping up, and the updates keep squashing them. The current version is Realmz 1.6.3, though we have provided version 1.6.2 and the updater patch to the most recent version. Please realize that, once you update your application you will have to “Begin a New Adventure...” before seeing the bug fixes or enhancements. This, the authors say, is because the corrupt data is stored in the saved game file when you first begin a game. The application is similar to a template, and a bug-fixed application will create bug-free games, but cannot fix files that were created with a previous version. Got it? So, you have to start over. In other new, the Realmz PC Editor has been updated to version 1.1, to ensure that it is compatible with the changes in the latest version of Realmz. And lastly, the Realmz Graphic Patch has been created for anyone who encounters blank, white squares in the countryside while playing the game.
• The MouseStick II software update we offered you last month had an inadvertent bug in it, says Advanced Gravis, that made it not work with Microsoft Flight Simulator. The current version 3.3.1b2 is a beta version (which means it is not guaranteed to be bug-free), but does fix the Flight Simulator problem. You should use this update if your current software is giving you any problems.
• We may have mentioned the Apple Multimedia Tuner 2.0.1 before, but let us do it again. More games and more applications (and more magazines!) are using QuickTime every day. This file goes in the Extensions folder on your Mac, and it fixes a number of things, including QuickTime playback and the reading of certain kinds of data. If you have QuickTime 2.0 and Sound Manager 3.0, you should use this.
